Happy Sunday (and Easter for those that celebrate)!
If you had told me when I started my business back in 2018 that I would be teaching others how to "let go" and build something sustainable that doesn't rely on them... I would have believed you.
Even though I didn't always do it myself (shocker, right?), I've always told people to let things go if it's within their reach. It took me a while to catch up to my own words, though.
The reason why I had a hard time letting things go was that:
1) I was conditioned to see asking for help as weak, and as a strong black independent woman, that was a no-no (wild)
2) I didn't have any strong processes in place to support delegating things out
The first required therapy. The second was something I picked up as a process consultant and started applying to all aspects of life. And now I teach it to everyone who will listen.
The key thing here is to acknowledge that the work has to be completed no matter what. We may have been conditioned to believe that we have to do it all, but there truly is no need.
Our task list will exist whether you do it or not. The shift you need to make here is "How can I build out my processes so that the tasks are always performed to an acceptable level?"
Because again, our tasks don't have feelings. We do. The tasks are sitting there waiting to be done. It doesn't care whether you do it or not.
Once you've accepted this, you can start building out your systems that allow for anyone to do them.
To start, it looks like
- Documenting the step-by-step processes for your most performed tasks and checking to see which steps can be automated or require a human touch.
- Developing SOPs for the processes that require a human touch and keeping them to the side
-
Identifying which roles you want to delegate in the near future, and start putting money aside for your ideal person.
- Remember, scaling DOES NOT mean your Operations are disrupted. While others may debate this, I believe you can scale by delegating, but it needs to be built in prior. I talk about it a bit in this TikTok video
You can apply this method in your home life as well. It takes a village to achieve goals.
